A lot of “dead batteries” are just dirty connections. This costs almost nothing to check and about ten minutes to fix.
Two jobs on one page, because they use the same tools and you often end up doing both: cleaning the terminals, and replacing the battery if cleaning does not fix it.

Safety first
- Wear eye protection. Battery acid does not grow eyes back.
- Take your rings and watch off before you start.
- Never let a wrench touch both posts at once. A car battery will push hundreds of amps through it and the tool will glow.
- No sparks, flames or smoking near it. Batteries give off hydrogen.
- If the case is cracked, leaking or swollen, do not touch it. Take it to be recycled.
What you need
- A wrench or socket, usually 10 mm, sometimes 13 mm
- A wire brush, or a few dollars for a battery terminal brush
- Baking soda and water, or a can of battery terminal cleaner
- Gloves and eye protection
Cleaning the terminals
- Engine off, key out.
- Look at the posts. White, blue or green crust is corrosion. Try twisting each clamp by hand — if it moves at all, it is loose, and loose alone can stop a car starting.
- Disconnect the negative first. That is the one marked − and usually with a black cable. Loosen the nut, twist the clamp gently and lift it off. Tuck it aside so it cannot spring back onto the post.
- Then disconnect the positive — marked + and usually red, often under a plastic cover.
- Scrub the posts and the inside of the clamps until you see clean, shiny metal. A paste of baking soda and water neutralises the acid and fizzes on the corrosion; wipe it off with a damp rag afterwards and dry everything.
- Reconnect the positive first, then the negative. Opposite order to removal, every time. Snug, not gorilla-tight — the posts are soft lead and will deform.
Negative off first, negative on last. That is the rule worth memorising. With the negative disconnected, a slipped wrench touching bodywork does nothing. With it connected, the same slip is a short circuit.
Replacing the battery
- Photograph everything first — which cable is where, how the hold-down clamp sits. Two minutes now saves fifteen later.
- Negative off, then positive off.
- Undo the hold-down bracket. Usually a clamp across the top or a bar at the base. Do not skip refitting this — a loose battery in a moving car is genuinely dangerous.
- Lift it out. They are heavier than they look, around 40 pounds. Lift with your legs and keep it level.
- Clean the tray while it is empty.
- Put the new one in the same way round — check your photo. Refit the hold-down.
- Positive on first, then negative.
Buying the right one
- Group size must match — it decides whether it physically fits and which post is which side.
- Cold cranking amps: match or beat what the manual says. More is fine, less is not.
- Check the date code. Batteries lose capacity sitting on a shelf. A sticker reading C6 usually means March 2026 — letter for month, digit for year.
- The core charge is refundable when you hand the old one back, usually $15–$25.
One thing to check before you start: some newer cars, particularly European models with stop-start, need the new battery registered to the charging system with a scan tool. Search your year and model plus “battery registration” first. If yours needs it, this becomes a shop job.
What to expect afterwards
Disconnecting the battery resets things. Expect to reset the clock and radio presets, and possibly re-enter a radio security code — worth finding that code before you start. The car may idle oddly for the first few minutes while the computer relearns, and the check engine light may briefly appear. All normal.
The mistakes that catch people
- Taking the positive off first.
- Overtightening and crushing the soft lead post.
- Forgetting the hold-down bracket.
- Replacing a battery that was fine. Test it first — or get a free load test at a parts store.
