This site exists because a repair bill is one of the few large purchases most people make without knowing the price beforehand.
You hand over the keys, you get a phone call with a number attached, and you say yes — because you need the car back and because you have no way to tell whether the number is fair. That is a bad position to negotiate from, and almost everybody has been in it.
What this site is
A plain-language reference on two things: what car repairs actually cost and how to deal with a shop, and which repairs an ordinary person can do at home with a modest set of tools.
Every cost figure here is researched, sourced and dated. Where a job is genuinely doable in a driveway, this site says so and walks through it. Where it is not, it says that too — and tells you what it should cost instead. That second half matters as much as the first. A site that tells you to tackle a job beyond your tools and experience is not saving you money.
What this site is not
- Not a repair shop. No appointments, no services, no parts sold.
- Not written by a mechanic. I am not a technician and I do not pretend to be one. What I do is research carefully, cite where the numbers come from, and explain things in language a normal person can act on.
- Not professional advice. It is information. Your car, your judgment, your call.
- Not out to make you distrust mechanics. Most shops are honest and most technicians are good at a difficult job. Knowing the numbers is how you find the good ones and keep the rest honest.
Where the numbers come from
Cost ranges are national averages compiled from published industry pricing data and checked against more than one source. Shop labor rates come from industry rate surveys. The Illinois legal material comes from the Automotive Repair Act itself. Tool prices are typical street prices at the time of writing.
Prices move. Anything with a figure on it carries the date it was checked, and the cost pages get reviewed once a year. If you find something that has gone stale or looks wrong, tell me — that is a favor, not a complaint.
